Seed maturation and environment

Seed maturation is characterized by the acquisition of the various components that together constitute physiological seed quality : desiccation tolerance, longevity, dormancy, germination speed and seedling stress tolerance. The acquisition of these traits are under the influence of biotic and biotic stresses. We seek to identify the molecular actors that are govern the acquisition of these seed traits and to understand the phenotypic plasticity of these seed traits in relation to stressfull environments.

Seed quality is strongly influenced by environment. Considering upcoming changes in climate, and the increasing treat of pathogen proliferation due to the expected reductions of phytosanitary products, we are also interested how seeds respond to abiotic and biotic stresses during maturation. In collaboration with the research groups Emersys et Fungisem, we are investigating the molecular dialog between developing seeds and pathogens (bacteria, fungi) that are transmitted by seeds (Terrasson et al., 2014). The influence of the paternal environment on the physiological seed quality is studied using association genetics in collaboration with UMR Agroecologie in Dijon, France.

To study the effect of abiotic stress on seed maturation, we generated transcriptome and physiological data during seed development, taking into account a different environmental conditions during seed development (hot, cold, drought) (more than 150 Nimblegen arrays). These data were used to generate a stable co-expression network (MatNet) that is used for the identification of modules related to the acquisition of TD or longevity through the integration of phenotypes, and to highlight the regulatory nodes that under the influence of the culture conditions (Righetti et al. 2015).
