EU pipfruit production has been decreasing significantly in the last 10 years. At the same time pipfruit production in the entire EU had to cope with new challenges, in particular the reconciliation of the obligation to significantly lower the input of phytosanitary treatments, while maintaining high quality and productivity. Therefore, there is a clear need for indicators and tools to monitor orchard and storage management for a sustainable production of high quality and healthy fruits.
Fruit Breeding is a time consuming and expensive process, which currently does not take into account GxE (xM) interactions. At present, research in pomefruit is guided by disciplinary approaches, notably genetics, breeding, ecophysiology, agronomy, and orchard management. A multidisciplinary approach is required to overcome some bottlenecks linked to the integration of each approach. This integration could benefit from the recent development of new methodologies such as modelling, genomics...
